Zolmitriptan 2.5mg tablets are commonly prescribed for use in the treatment of migraine and cluster headache.
Zolmitriptan is a serotonin receptor agonist, belonging to a class of drugs known as the triptans. Zolmitriptan tablets work to treat the root cause of migraines through a complex neurological mechanism of action. By acting on serotonin (5HT) receptors, Zolmitriptan tablets enable the narrowing of blood vessels in the brain. This contricting effect is what results in the effective treatment of migraine and its associated symptoms.
Migraine is defined as a moderate to severe headache. Indicative signs of migraine are a throbbing pain on the side of the head often accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, as well as a heightened sensitivity to light and/or sound, referred to as aura. What dose should I choose?
The recommended starting dose of Zolmitriptan tablets in accordance with the British National Formulary (BNF) is 2.5mg to be taken at the onset of a migraine attack, followed by 2.5mg at least 2 hours later if symptoms of migraine recurs. This can be increased to 5mg for subsequent attacks only in patients not achieving satisfactory relief with 2.5mg.
If symptoms persist for more than 2 hours and there is no response to the initial dose, a second dose should not be taken for the same attack.
The maximum daily dose of Zolmitriptan tablets is 10mg in any 24-hour period. Zolmitriptan is licensed for use in adults between the ages of 18-65 years.
