How should I use Emla cream?
EMLA Cream should be applied sparingly to the tip of the penis 15-30 minutes prior to engaging in sexual activity. After successful application you should wipe off any excess/residual cream before beginning sexual activity. The duration of its effects can vary, and depend upon where on the penis it is applied, successful desensitization of nerve endings, as well as external factors such as stimulation and arousal during sexual activity.
As EMLA Ceam is a topical oil-based cream, when using latex based condoms it can weaken their integrity, thus increasing the risk of contraceptive failure and a condom splitting. For this reason we advise against the use of latex based condoms when engaging in sexual activity using EMLA cream. You must take alternative precautions to avoid unwanted pregnancy or transmission of STIs.
Please note, it is safe to use polyurethane condoms when using EMLA cream, as their integrity will not be effected when using this treatment.
