Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is the most commonly occuring form of allergic reaction. Symptoms of hayfever occur as a result of inflammation in the nose, brought about due to the bodies immune response to allergens present in the air.
An allergy is your bodies reaction to a specific food or substance, commonly referred to as an allergen. Allergic reactions happen when an allergen triggers an immune response in the body, resulting in the production of antibodies to fight off the specific allergen. If the body encounters the same allergen again, its antibodies begin a cascade of events, one of which is the release of a chemical called histamine, a key component of any allergic reaction.
Common symptoms of allergic reactions include:
sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, red, itchy, watery eyes, wheezing and coughing ,a red, itchy rash, and/or worsening of asthma or eczema symptoms

What causes allergies?
There are many allergens that can cause allergic reactions, but some of the most common include:
- grass and tree pollen – an allergy to these is called Hay Fever (Allergic Rhinitis)
- dust mites
- food – particularly nuts, fruit, shellfish, eggs and cow's milk
- insect bites and stings
- latex – a material used to make some gloves and condoms
Allergies can run in families and they can also be triggered by environmental factors. For example, studies have revealed that children are at an increased risk if they grow up in a home where people smoke, have pets, are exposed to dust mites and use antibiotics.
